The Aran Sweater has attracted quite a celebrity following over the years. From Irish to International stardom, you can see what makes this style of sweater so appealing - it's intricate stitching, traditional style, warm quality, and amazing history.
From its humble beginning on the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway, Ireland the Aran Sweater was knitted by local women for the fishermen in the area as a necessity, never even imagining that their proud creation would reach the cover of Vogue magazine as it did in 1950 and several times since.
So here's a rundown of some of the most famous fans of the Aran Sweater.

The first occasion many people would have seen an Aran Sweater was on Irish Folkband 'The Clancy Brothers'.
While touring in the United States in the 1960's, the story has it that their mother back in Ireland had heard news of terrible snow storms in New York City and sent Aran Sweaters for her sons and long term collaborator Tommy Mackem to keep them warm.
The Sweaters became their signature look which came to prominence after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and the fame of the Aran Sweater rose accordingly.
More recently, the iconic pop superstar that is Taylor Swift, released her album Folklore to much acclaim. However many people were drawn on the promo shots featuring Taylor in a beautiful roll neck Aran Sweater with traditional diamond and cable stitching. A wonderful Irish look that has captured worldwide attention for Aran knitwear once again.
Late last year, Chris Evans was responsible for an Aran comeback as a result of his movie 'Knives Out'. A firm fan of the sweater, Chris is said to have taken all his Aran Sweaters home once the movie wrapped up and even treated his pet Dog to his very own piece of Aran knitwear.

The appearance of Steve McQueen in The Thomas Crown Affair ensured Aran remained a stylish choice in the late sixties. Pictured on the film set wearing a cream vintage Aran Sweater with cable and braided stitching, Steve McQueen wears his Aran sweater well and brings it to a whole new audience.
In 1960 Marilyn Monroe appears in her movie wearing an oversized baby blue Aran sweater and tights as she performs. A fashionable look for sure, for an Irish staple, that once belonged on the high seas.

Elvis too was a fan of the traditional Irish piece on knitwear. He is seen here on the set of his film Jailhouse Rock in 1957. A round neck sweater adorned with Aran braiding became a popular item after Elvis's approval.
Taking the Aran Sweater into the fashion world, Vogue magazine featured the Aran Jumper on it's cover in 1950. Shortly afterward Grace Kelly was spotted out yachting wearing this cream roll neck Aran.
